A chess class made for Bayside weekends

If you're anywhere in Melbourne's Bayside area — Brighton, Hampton, Sandringham, Highett, Black Rock, Beaumaris or Cheltenham — our venue at 2 Livingston St, Highett sits right on your corridor. Most Bayside families are here in about ten minutes or less: straight down Highett Rd from Hampton, along Bay Rd or South Rd from Brighton and Sandringham, or up the Nepean Hwy from Cheltenham. The venue is also a short walk from Highett station on the Frankston line.

Classes run on Sunday afternoons, which Bayside parents tell us is the slot that actually works: Saturday sport, Saturday-morning swimming and beach time stay untouched, and chess becomes the calm, screen-free hour before the school week starts. Kids are grouped by level rather than age, groups stay small at around ten children, and every class is taught personally by Gabriel Rips, a coach ranked in the top 0.1% of players on Chess.com with 7+ years of teaching experience and a Working With Children Check.

We already have families from right across the bayside south-east — see the local pages for Brighton, Hampton, Highett and Cheltenham for drive times and details specific to your suburb.

Common questions

Which Bayside suburbs do families come from?
Our biggest groups come from Highett, Cheltenham, Bentleigh and Brighton-side suburbs, and families from Hampton East, Sandringham and Mentone attend too. Wherever you are in Bayside, the drive is short — the venue is central at 2 Livingston St, Highett.
How much do the classes cost?
Your child's first class is a free trial, so they can try it with no commitment. After that it's $25 a lesson, billed by the term and pro-rated if you join partway through. There are no membership fees.
My child has never played chess — is that okay?
Completely. The New to Chess group (12:00-1:00pm) teaches the rules from scratch, and older beginners get their own group. Register and we'll place your child at the right level.
