An easy Sunday routine for Hampton families

If your weekends run on beach time, sport and birthday parties, this is a class that slots in without a fight. From Hampton it's a straight shot along Highett Rd — about 7 minutes' drive — to 2 Livingston St, just off Highett Rd and a short walk from Highett station. There's street parking on and around Livingston St, so drop-off takes under a minute. Families from neighbouring Hampton East already attend, alongside kids from Highett, Brighton, Cheltenham, Moorabbin and surrounds, and the program holds a 5.0-star rating on Google from 20+ reviews. If your child is at Hampton Primary or St Mary's, a Sunday class also means chess never has to compete with after-school activities.

Classes are drop-off: you don't need to stay, which helps the kids settle and focus — and gives you an hour back on a Sunday afternoon. Bring nothing; boards, pieces and puzzles are all provided. Each group is kept small (around ten kids) so every child gets real attention from the coach, Gabriel Rips — ranked in the top 0.2% of players on Chess.com, with five-plus years of tutoring experience and a Working With Children Check. Over 70 kids have come through the program so far, from complete beginners still learning how the pieces move to sharp intermediates who will happily beat their parents.

Hampton questions, answered

How do we get there from Hampton?
Head down Highett Rd and you're there in about 7 minutes by car — 2 Livingston St is just off Highett Rd, a short walk from Highett station. There's street parking on and around Livingston St for drop-off and pick-up, and because it's one straight road the whole way, the run home is just as painless.
How much do the classes cost?
Free first week, then $25 each lesson. No fees beyond that and no lock-in — see the homepage FAQ for the full value comparison.
Will chess fit around weekend sport and beach mornings?
That's the idea. Each group's class runs for one hour on Sunday afternoon, between 12:00 and 4:45pm depending on your child's level, so the morning stays free for nippers, netball or the beach. And because it's drop-off with no lock-in, you're never committed beyond the week — kids can join any week, and after the free first week it's simply $25 a lesson. If a Sunday gets swallowed by sport or a party, you just skip it — there's nothing to cancel.
